It's pretty likely that Gabe ran out to go crush some skulls. Literally. That, or he was carrying people over the skeleton mobs so they can get where they need to be safely.
He doesn't have any purely offensive superpowers, so when he's out on his own, he's used to improvising. He probably took some skeleton's leg and started beating his other undead buddies with it.
